Tips for your Neck

Neck tightness can be reduced by observing preferences in movement. Turn your head slowly to the right, then to the left.  Observe which side feels more comfortable or is easier to move toward.  Return to the preferred side - staying within your comfort level for the distance you turn.  Hold for 10-30 seconds while you breathe normally.  Recheck the movement to the right and left.  Was there any change? Check side bending (ear to shoulder) movement the same way.

Left Bending Movement

Neck tightness can also be a restriction in the forward or backward movement of your head. Observe, as you nod your head back and forth, where you are most comfortable. Stay in that position for 10-30 seconds. Do not hold your breath. Recheck the forward/backward movement - is it more balanced?
For an alternative to the holding - stay within the comfortable range of motion and continue the motion (nodding, rotating or side bending moves). Make sure the movements are slow and small to start, gradually increasing the speed and/or area of movement. Continue for 30 seconds or so.
